Side by side
Jesus in the Gospels and the Qur’an
Twelve moments in the life of Jesus, told by the Gospels on one side and by the Qur’an on the other. Read both, and see for yourself where they meet and where they part.
The Qur’an does not retell the Gospels, but it tells many of the same moments: the annunciation, a virgin birth, miracles, disciples, a message to worship God alone, and Jesus taken up to God. On some of them the two books are strikingly close. On others, above all the cross and the question of who Jesus is, they say different things, and we show those differences as plainly as the agreements.
The Gospel passages are quoted from translations that are free to share, named at the end of the page, and the Qur’an from the translation used throughout this site. Nothing has been shortened to make the two look closer than they are.
1The annunciation
Both books tell of the angel’s visit, Mary’s question, and the answer that nothing is beyond God. Luke calls the child the Son of the Most High; the Qur’an calls him a Word from God and the Messiah.
The Gospels
26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!” 29 But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be. 30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. 36 Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For everything spoken by God is possible.” 38 Mary said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her.
Luke 1:26–38
The Qur’an
45 [Remember] when the angels said, “O Mary, Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary; honorable in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those near [to Allah]. 46 He will speak to people in the cradle and in maturity, and he will be one of the righteous.” 47 She said: “My Lord, how can I have a child when no man has ever touched me?” He said, “Thus Allah creates what He wills. When He decrees something, He only says to it ‘Be’, and it is.
16 And mention in the Book [the story of] Mary when she withdrew from her family to a place towards the east. 17 She screened herself from them, then We sent to her Our Spirit [Gabriel] and he appeared before her in the form of a perfect human being. 18 She said, “I seek refuge in the Most Compassionate from you; [do not approach me] if you fear Allah.” 19 He said, “I am only a messenger from your Lord to grant you a righteous son.” 20 She said, “How can I have a son when no man has touched me, nor have I ever been unchaste?” 21 He said, “Thus it will be; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me; We make him a sign for people and a mercy from Us. This matter has already been decreed.’”
2Blessed among women
Elizabeth’s greeting in Luke and the angels’ words in the Qur’an say almost the same thing: Mary is chosen and blessed above all women.
The Gospels
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 She called out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
Luke 1:41–42
The Qur’an
And [remember] when the angels said, “O Mary, Allah has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you over all women.
3A virgin birth
Matthew tells it from Joseph’s side; the Qur’an from Mary’s. Both say the child was conceived by God’s spirit, without a father.
The Gospels
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly. 20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:18–21
The Qur’an
And [remember Mary] who guarded her chastity; We breathed in her [garment] through Our Spirit [Gabriel] and made her and her son a sign for all people.
Also [the example of] Mary, daughter of ‘Imrān who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her through Our angel [Gabriel], and she firmly believed in the words of her Lord and His Scriptures and was one of the obedient.
4The birth
Luke has a manger in Bethlehem; the Qur’an a palm tree in a distant place. Both have a mother alone with her newborn son.
The Gospels
6 While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6–7
The Qur’an
22 So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a distant place. 23 The pains of labor drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, “Oh, would that I had died before this and had been completely forgotten!” 24 Then he called her from beneath her, “Do not grieve; your Lord has provided a stream beneath you. 25 Shake the trunk of the palm tree towards yourself; fresh ripe dates will drop upon you. 26 Eat and drink, and be glad. And if you see any human being, say, ‘I have vowed silence to the Most Compassionate, so I will not talk to any human being today.’”
5The miracles
Nearly the same list: the blind see, lepers are cleansed, the dead are raised. The Qur’an adds, each time, “by God’s permission”.
The Gospels
4 Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
Matthew 11:4–5
The Qur’an
And [will send him as] a messenger to the Children of Israel, ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord that I make for you from clay the figure of a bird, then breathe into it, and it will become a bird by Allah’s permission; and I heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead to life by Allah’s permission; and I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. There is a sign in this for you, if you are believers.
6Who sent him
In both, Jesus points away from himself to the One who sent him, and says that his teaching is not his own.
The Gospels
16 Jesus therefore answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I am speaking from myself. 18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
John 7:16–18
The Qur’an
Jesus said, “I am a slave of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.
63 When Jesus came with clear signs, he said, “I have come to you with wisdom, and to clarify to you some of that concerning which you differ; so fear Allah and obey me. 64 Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him. This is a straight path.”
7Worship God alone
The commandment Jesus quotes in Matthew and Mark, and the sentence the Qur’an puts in his mouth, are the same sentence. The two faiths differ on whether Jesus himself is to be worshipped.
The Gospels
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”
Matthew 4:10
29 Jesus answered, “The greatest is, ‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one: 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’This is the first commandment.
Mark 12:29–30
The Qur’an
Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is the straight path.”
They have certainly disbelieved, those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary.” But the Messiah said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates any partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his abode will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.
8The disciples
Twelve apostles in Luke; in the Qur’an the “helpers” (hawariyyun), who answer Jesus’ call and declare themselves submitted to God.
The Gospels
12 In these days, he went out to the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God. 13 When it was day, he called his disciples, and from them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles:
Luke 6:12–13
The Qur’an
52 When Jesus sensed disbelief from them, he said, “Who are my helpers in the cause of Allah?” The disciples said, “We are helpers of Allah. We believe in Allah; so bear witness that we are Muslims.” 53 “Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down and we follow the messenger; so count us among those who bear witness [to the truth].”
9One who comes after him
Jesus promises another Counsellor in John. Christians read this as the Holy Spirit; Muslims have read it as the promise the Qur’an says Jesus made, of a messenger named Ahmad. Here the two readings part.
The Gospels
15 If you love me, keep my commandments. 16 I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.
John 14:15–17
The Qur’an
And [remember] when Jesus, son of Mary, said, “O Children of Israel, I am truly a messenger of Allah to you, confirming the Torah which came before me, and giving glad tidings of a messenger after me whose name will be Ahmad.” But when he came to them with clear proofs, they said, “This is clear magic.”
10The cross
The sharpest difference. Mark describes the crucifixion and the death of Jesus; the Qur’an says he was neither killed nor crucified, though it appeared so.
The Gospels
24 Crucifying him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots on them, what each should take. 25 It was the third hour, and they crucified him.
Mark 15:24–25
37 Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit.
Mark 15:37
The Qur’an
157 and for their saying, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear to them so. Even those who dispute it are in doubt about it; they have no certain knowledge other than conjecture. But they certainly did not kill him. 158 Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself, and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
11Taken up to God
Acts and the Qur’an both end the earthly story with Jesus raised to God, and both expect him to come back.
The Gospels
9 When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing, 11 who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.”
Acts 1:9–11
The Qur’an
And [remember] when Allah said, “O Jesus, I will take you and raise you up to Myself and deliver you from those who disbelieve, and make those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then you will all return to Me, and I will judge between you concerning that over which you differed.
12Son of God?
John opens with the Word who was God and became flesh. The Qur’an calls Jesus God’s Word too, but insists that God has no son, and has Jesus himself say that he never asked to be worshipped. This is where the Gospel of John and the Qur’an finally part company.
The Gospels
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1
14 The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
The Qur’an
O People of the Book, do not go to extremes in your religion, and do not say about Allah but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His Word that He bestowed upon Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say “Three” [i.e., Trinity]. Cease; that is better for you. Indeed, Allah is the only One God. Glory be to Him! He is far exalted above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth, and sufficient is Allah as a Disposer of Affairs.
116 When Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary, did you tell people, ‘Take me and my mother as gods besides Allah?’ He will say, ‘Glory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right. Had I said so, You would have surely known it. You know what is within myself, whereas I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, You are the All-Knower of all unseen.’” 117 I did not tell them except what You ordered me – ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ I was witness over them as long as I was among them. But when You took me up, You Yourself were the Watcher over them, and You are a Witness over all things.
