The short answer

Friday, al-Jumu‘ah, is the weekly day of congregation. The midday prayer is replaced by a shorter prayer preceded by a sermon, khutbah, and Qur’an 62:9 commands believers to leave trade and hasten to it when the call is given. Attendance is obligatory for adult men and open to women; many mosques are fullest at this time.

A little more context

Friday is not a Sabbath. The Qur’an tells believers to return to their work once the prayer is finished, and in many Muslim countries Friday is a day off for convenience rather than religious law. Muslims often wear clean or better clothes, bathe beforehand, and send extra blessings on the Prophet on this day.
