The short answer
Mecca is the city of the Ka‘bah, the house Muslims believe Abraham built, and the direction of prayer for Muslims everywhere. It is where Muhammad was born around 570 and where the first revelation came to him. Pilgrims perform Hajj and ‘Umrah there, and the Grand Mosque surrounds the Ka‘bah.
A little more context
Medina, about 450 kilometres north, is the city that received the Prophet and his followers in 622, the migration from which the Islamic calendar is counted. There the first Muslim community took shape, and there the Prophet died and was buried in 632; his grave lies within the Prophet’s Mosque. Both cities are in present-day Saudi Arabia, and the central sacred areas are reserved for Muslims.
