The short answer

The Prophet wore a beard and is reported to have told his followers to let their beards grow and trim their moustaches, distinguishing themselves from the customs of surrounding peoples. Most schools of law regard growing a beard as at least recommended, and some as obligatory; many Muslim men keep one as an expression of following his example. Many others do not, and a clean-shaven Muslim is no less a Muslim.

A little more context

Caps, turbans, and other head coverings for men are cultural and devotional rather than required. Covering the head during prayer is a long-standing custom in many communities. Dress varies enormously across the Muslim world, and local culture often shapes it more than religious rules.
